Many skilled hands shape an Aijek garment before it reaches yours.

At the heart of our designs is Kerawang, a centuries-old cutwork embroidery technique practised by Balinese artisans and passed down through generations.

Known for its delicate, lace-like openwork and dimensional texture, Kerawang is a slow and meticulous craft, requiring skill, precision and patience.

Each garment passes through the hands of artisans, pattern makers, dyers, embroiderers and seamstresses, with every stage contributing to the character of the finished piece. Subtle variations are part of the process, making each garment uniquely its own.

It is a process that celebrates the beauty of the human hand and the people, knowledge and craftsmanship behind every Aijek design.

The Motif

It begins with an idea.

Guided by sketches, references and technical drawings, our artisans bring each original motif to life by hand.

Drawing on skills passed down through generations, they instinctively refine every curve, proportion and space, imagining how the embroidery will eventually take shape on the garment.
The Placement

Once finalised, the artwork is transferred onto fabric using a screen printing method.

At the same time, the garment pattern is refined around it—shifting a seam, proportion or placement so the embroidery feels integral to the design.

The Openwork

Each line is embroidered first to strengthen the fabric, before sections are carefully cut away by hand to reveal Kerawang’s delicate, lace-like texture.

Precision is essential: the stitching and cutting must follow a careful sequence to prevent unravelling.

A fully embroidered short dress requires 5 days to complete.
